Laughin' to Keep from Cryin' is a 1958 studio album by Lester Young featuring the trumpeters Harry "Sweets" Edison and Roy Eldridge this date apparently had a lot of difficulties but the recorded results are excellent. Young takes rare clarinet solos on two of the selections with his emotional statement on "They Can't Take That Away from Me" being one of the highpoints of his career. Voilà un disque particulier, le chant du cygne de Lester Young. C'est son dernier enregistrement aux USA (février 1958), son avant-dernier disque (le dernier étant enregistré mars 1959 à Paris). Sait-il qu'il va mourir bientôt ? Quelles douleurs veut-il encore partager avec nous ?Deux vieux compagnons de pupitre sont à ses côtés: les trompettistes Roy Eldridge et Harry Sweet Edison. Hank Jones est au piano, Herb Ellis à la guitare, George Duvivier à la contrebasse et Mickey Sheen à la batterie. Ils donnent tous le meilleur d'eux-mêmes, ultime occasion d'une jam-session avec Lester Young. Ils servent un écrin musical à leur ami Lester Le contraste est pourtant grand entre ces musiciens en pleine maîtrise de leur art, et le son hésitant, balbutiant, mais si bouleversant de Lester. Le disque met parfois mal à l'aise, on est gêné d'écouter un musicien qui n'est plus que l'ombre de lui-même. L'alcool est quasiment devenu sa seule nourriture ; l'homme n'a plus guère de souffle, certaines notes sont à peine émises mais l'émotion est à fleur de peau. Comment rester insensible à ses chorus à la clarinette (oui à la clarinette dont il joue dans les deux premiers morceaux ) sur «Salute to Benny» et «They can't take that away from me» ou ses derniers solos au saxophone comme sur «Mean to me» qui clôt le disque.
