Ralph Peterson Jr. (born May 20, 1962) is an American jazz drummer and bandleader. Four of Peterson's uncles and his grandfather were drummers. Peterson himself began on percussion at age three. He was raised in Pleasantville, where he played trumpet at Pleasantville High School and worked locally in funk groups. He applied to Livingston College and Rutgers to study drums, but he failed the percussion entrance exam and enrolled as a trumpeter instead, graduating in 1984.

Based on Outer Reaches, absolutely. Debuting his Unity Project, Peterson looks fondly back at organist Larry Young's 1966 Blue Note classic, Unity. But like his kick-ass Art Blakey homage, Art (Blue Note, 1994), Peterson may mirror the lineup of Young's career watershed, but transcends mere imitation through unbridled energy and a modern approach to the organ-driven ensemble that, in Unity's time, shattered misconceptions about the venerable Hammond B3's potential. Peterson may be battling the inevitable results of being absent for more than half a decade, but on the strengths of Outer Reaches, he deserves to be welcomed back, and with open arms. Hopefully this is the beginning of renewed activity for the drummer, because he's been away for far too long.

Fives years ago Ralph Peterson met organist Pat Bianchi in Denver Co. At a clinic and gig at UC Boulder. Immediately upon meeting an accord was struck between the two musicians. They have a connection that is sometimes telepathic and this group Unity is the platform to showcase their amazing musical connection. Peterson’s history with jazz organ goes back more then 25 years to the great clubs of New Jersey like Mr. West and Sparky J’s. Here Peterson cut his teeth with musical greats like Leo Johnson, Gene Phipps, Eddie Gladden, and Dave Eubanks.
Outer Reaches is drummer Ralph Peterson’s tribute to organist Larry Young and trumpeter Woody Shaw. Not surprisingly, its 12 tracks include two-thirds of their 1965 New Thing classic, Unity. The quartet (Peterson, trumpeter Josh Evans, saxophonist Jovan Alexandre and organist Pat Bianchi) also performs tunes by John McLaughlin and Peterson himself, in a solid but unexceptional journey from soul-jazz to fusion. Bianchi steeps himself in the soul that Young took bold leaps out of. Hence The Moontrane and Beyond All Limits have gospel and blues injected back into them. Busy is a good word for Peterson’s work on the album. He takes extended solos on eight tracks, sounding fine and swinging throughout (with a magnificent slow burn on We Three Kings ), and on most tunes gives a sudden great release of aggression on the head reprise.
