A charming little beauty, Starry Starry Night is a collection of cover versions of mainly familiar material by drummer Paul Clarvis and pianist Liam Noble, two characterful lights of the British jazz scene. The tunes range from classic standards like Duke Ellington's "Mood Indigo," the Gershwins' "Embraceable You" and Scott Joplin's "Maple Leaf Rag," through to more recent treasures like Gillian Welch's "Dear Someone," Don Maclean's "Vincent (Starry Starry Night)" and Moondog's "Paris

Paul Clarvis is the idiosyncratic classical percussionist who was Leonard Bernstein's first choice on his UK trips, and who is nowadays equally active on the jazz and al circuits. His eclecticism isn't a career move or a calculated experiment, but an almost innocent openness to playing and hearing all music with equal wonderment. Clarvis and Noble have made what you might call a "modest" album here - it avoids grandstanding effects and seeks to be no more than an open and empathetic conversation about standard songs by everyone from Duke Ellington to Paul Simon. Some are built up in hints, like Shadow of Your Smile, and some are great tunes played respectfully straight, such as the ballad Dear Someone and a rollicking Maple Leaf Rag.

Clarvis and Noble, on drums and piano respectively, have gentle, clever fun with 11 standards, ranging from Scott Joplin to Paul Simon. Sometimes the treatment is charmingly literal, for instance in the fluttering brushwork in "Poor Butterfly". During "The Entertainer" even the ghost of Les Dawson puts in a brief appearance.
