The songs move at a pretty, slow place, and the opening track sees Cooder plucking his guitar's strings and letting that sound vibrate into thin air; it's a motif that he returns to repeatedly throughout the score

I would add nothing to the review's description of this splendid album; it is an atmospheric bit of genius. What I would add is its musical origin, specifically Blind Willie Johnson's "Dark Was The Night, Cold Was The Ground", which Cooder works and reworks throughout the album to brilliant effect, finally culminating in an exquisite instrumental full version of the song on the last track."Dark Was The Night..." is described by Cooder as "the most soulful, transcendent piece in all American music" and was chosen as one of the 27 musical works recorded onto a gold dic and sent into space on the Voyager spacecraft to represent Earth's culture. It is included in the Library of Congress' National Recording Registry. If I'm to have a soundtrack in my 10 albums I'd Take To A Deserted Island list, it would be Paris, Texas.

Ry Cooder's striking and stunning slide guitar score for my favorite American film of all time perfectly summons the atmospheres and themes of the desert, loneliness, and the open road. He was heavily influenced and inspired by the blues singer/slide guitarist Blind Willie Johnson who wrote the most haunting blues song of all time "Dark Was the Night". Paris, Texas (alongside Bruce Langhorne's The Hired Hand) is my favorite soundtrack of all time.
