The best performances of Elgar's Violin Concerto have always thrown caution to the winds and attacked the work with unrestrained passion. This doesn't mean, of course, that they can throw their technique and their taste to the wind as well. Elgar's concerto is one of the supreme tests for the virtuoso and the interpreter and woe betide them if they're not up to its musical and emotional demands

Shaham performs Elgar’s emotional epic with a clean, incisive sound and a sense of heroic despair, but fails to capture the melancholy that makes the work one of the great end-of-empire statements. After the long orchestral introduction of sweaty Edwardian anxiety, Shaham’s entry is the bold voice of a classical actor stating a tragic circumstance

Shaham performed Elgar’s Violin Concerto in October 2008, conducted by David Zinman. In the second part of the programme, the American conductor presented a work composed in his own country. Béla Bartók, an uncompromising opponent of National Socialism and Fascism, left Europe in 1940 and went into exile in America. Gil Shaham was born in Illinois in 1971, but grew up in Israel. He was seven when he started to play the violin. His exceptional talent soon attracted attention, his early mentors including Haim Taub, who became the boy’s teacher in 1980 and who introduced him to Isaac Stern, Nathan Milstein, Henryk Szeryng and Jaime Laredo. He completed his studies with the famous violin teacher Dorothy DeLay at the Juilliard School of Music in New York.

Edward Elgar's Violin Concerto in B minor, Op. 61, is one of his longest orchestral compositions, and the last of his works to gain immediate popular success. The concerto was composed for the violinist Fritz Kreisler, who gave the premiere in London in 1910, with the composer conducting.

The Violin Concerto, with the Elgar/Mehuhin partnership in 1932, must be heard to be believed. The interpretation is without peer, and the playing by Menuhin is outstanding. The sound quality of the concerto rivals many digital recordings. A must have for all Elgar fans!!!! The 'Enigma' Variations will suprise you with their tempo. The sound quality (from 1926) is less impressive than the concerto, but still good.

Edward Elgar's Violin Concerto was first recorded complete in 1929. Truncated versions had been recorded in 1916 using the acoustic recording process, the technical limitations of which necessitated drastic rearrangement of the score. Electrical recording, introduced in the 1920s, gave a greatly improved dynamic range and realism, and the two leading English record companies, Columbia and His Master's Voice (HMV) both made recordings of the concerto that remain in the catalogue  . Kyoko Takezawa, Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, Sir Colin Davis. Yehudi Menuhin, London Symphony Orchestra, Sir Edward Elgar.
