The One is the twenty-third studio album by the English singer-songwriter Elton John, released on 22 June 1992. It was recorded at Studio Guillame Tell in Paris, produced by Chris Thomas and managed by John Reid. The album was dedicated to Vance Buck, and its cover artwork was designed by Gianni Versace. The One spent three consecutive weeks at without reaching in the UK, being kept off the top spot by Lionel Richie's Back to Front compilation

Elton John once claimed that he could remember The One among his latter-day albums because it was the first he recorded without drugs or alcohol. If true - and there's no reason to doubt him - that could be the reason why this has more character than most of his albums since the early '80s, holding together well in its deliberately measured, mature songcraft by Elton and Bernie Taupin. If there's any real problem, it's that the album just doesn't have many memorable songs. Though they're all reasonably melodic and well-crafted, none of the them have memorable musical or lyrical hooks and, if anything, Chris Thomas' production is too evenhanded. Still, even if it isn't memorable, it does represent a meaningful move forward, just because it does sound warmer and more considered than the records that immediately preceded it. Track Listing.

Elton’s 24th studio album is packed with notable guest appearances, from Eric Clapton on the duet Runaway Train to David Gilmour on Understanding Women to Gianni Versace, who designed the cover artwork. This album, his highest-charting record in the US since 1976's Blue Moves, hit on the Billboard 200 chart ( on the UK Album Chart) with the eponymous single The One reaching on the Adult Contemporary chart. The album also saw a second AC hit single with the track Simple Life.

Another Elton John album that is known mainly for a hit single (in this case, the titular track), but in reality brings much more to the table than just that. It is one of his most mature efforts from all fronts, whether it be vocals, lyrical content, or production. Besides the title track, "Sweat It Out" is savage in every way, featuring some great piano playing in the instrumental breaks, "The North" is regarded by Elton himself as one of his finest songs, for good reason, and "The Last Song" ranks among his and Taupin's finest collaborations, with gut-wrenching lyrics set to an affecting string and piano arrangement. Overall, this record is one that takes some time to digest completely, but there's a good chance that you'll be able to get past the seeming simplicity of it and come to appreciate how deep of an album this actually is.
I fully agree with Alex, this is an underrated album known for one single but has considerably more to offer.Generally, the song compositions are not up to four star but the sound and thought-out studio work easily round up the score to 4 stars. Keyboard workouts are on display in almost every songs and this brings natural flavour unheard since the beginning of the 80's.It is my most favourite EJ solo album although there are certainly better ones by a margin. Let's start from the beginning: "Simple Life" is a easy start with convincing drum pattern. "The One" is one of the best EJ singles at least since 1985's Nikita. Haunting dreamy melody, piano soloing and convincing vocal make it an easy favourite track. Wonderful performance."Sweat it out" is a song of contrasts - very contemporary sound characterized by EJ's almost rap-like singing, effective electronic drums and brilliant piano soloing in the end, which is so typical of this album. Country flavour, not typical for EJ, can be heard in the "Whitewash country"."Runeway train" is a cooperation with Eric Clapton - both vocal and instrumental. EJ shows nice but restrained Hammond organ chops."The north" is compositionally not of the best songs on this album. Several melodical alterations and clear crescendo make this a memorable track.Apart from "The One", two other outstanding ballads are "When a woman doesn't want you" and the piano based majestic "The last song". The average song with another perfect instrumental and fitting part - a guitar solo by the unforgettable David Gilmour.Overall, this is a great focused and convincing album that required a few spins though to be fully appreciated. The bonus tracks are non-essential but a welcome addition. It is amazing how an artist at the age of 45 can create such mature and absorping record.
