Syrian Orthodox Church: Tradition Of Tur Abdin In Mesopotamia. Released by Smithsonian Folkways Recordings, Auvidis-UNESCO Dec 2014 4 Tracks.

The Syrian Orthodox Church (referred to as the Syriac Orthodox Church in English-speaking countries since 2000) is one of the oldest Christian churches of the Middle East according to ethnomusicologist Christian Poche. Tur Abdin, presented here by priests and monks from eastern Turkey, is one of three traditions of Syrian chant that remain in practice, along with Mardin and Tagrit. This album is part of the UNESCO Collection of Traditional Music.

The album starts with a mass which drags on for a full 45 minutes. While the service in vivo might be something worth attending, the recorded music is perhaps not.

3 Iran and Central Asia. Over a hundred Syriac Orthodox dioceses and around a thousand bishops are attested between the sixth and thirteenth centuries. The main source for these dioceses and bishops are the lists of Michael the Syrian, compiled in the twelfth century. As with the Church of the East, it seems likely that a number of Syriac Orthodox dioceses in Mesopotamia came to an end in the fourteenth century. Only six Syriac Orthodox dioceses which existed at the end of the thirteenth century definitely persisted into the sixteenth century: Amid, Damascus, Gazarta, Hah, Mardin and Qartmin.
