Six works by J. S. Bach which set the standard for solo violin pieces until the present da. J. Bach’s Sonatas and Partitas for solo violin are a set of six which the composer began around 1703 and completed in 1720, but they were only published together more than 50 years after Bach’s death. The sonatas each consist of four movements, in the typical slow-fast-slow-fast structure. The partitas, however, are more unorthodox. They make use of the usual baroque dance mixture of Allemande, Courante, Sarabande, and Gigue, but Bach added new elements to provide variety. New releases: Vladimir Ashkenazy plays Bach and Maxim Rysanov plays Schubert. New Releases: Bach with Zhu Xiao-Mei and Emmanuel Despax plays Chopin.
Sonata No. 1 in G Minor for Solo Violin, BWV 1001 Presto from . Bach's Sonata No. 1 in G Minor for Solo Violin, BWV 1001; from a 1954 recording by Henryk Szeryng. Partita No. 1 in B Minor for Solo Violin, BWV 1002 Tempo de bourrée from . Bach's Partita No. 1 in B Minor for Solo Violin, BWV 1002; from a 1954 recording by violinist Henryk Szeryng. The partitas are more varied in construction, having from five to eight movements, each generally rather short and often based upon the rhythms of ballroom dances, such as minuets, gigues, allemandes, sarabandes, siciliennes, and bourrées. The varying selection of dance rhythms allows for contrasting moods and energy levels.
