Monumental Serious Theatrical. Stokowski Conducts Schubert, Wagner, Brahms. Conductor, Primary Artist.
Listen to him conduct the London Philharmonic Orchestra in Schubert's Unfinished Symphony with a unique tension and passion. And there he is in 1972, at ninety, impulsive, giving his farewell concert with the London Symphony Orchestra: the overture of The Master Singers by Wagner flows like a torrent of lava and Debussy's Prelude à l'Après-midi d'un faune comes alive with a thousand different details.
Stokowski conducts Brahms & Wagner. recorded 23rd February 1960 at Academy of Music, Philadelphia. Philadelphia Orchestra, Leopold Stokowski. Philadelphia Orchestra. Wagner: Tristan und Isolde: Symphonic Synthesis.
Leopold STOKOWSKI Franz SCHUBERT (1797-1828) Symphony No 8 "Unfinished" Richard WAGNER (1813-1883) Forest Murmurs from Siegfried Johannes BRAHMS (1833-1897) Symphony No 1 All-American Youth Orchestra (Schubert) Hollywood Bowl Symphony Orchestra (Wagner, Brahms) Leopold Stokowski Recorded Schubert July 1941, Wagner August 1946, Brahms August 1945 CALA CACD 0520 Stokowski recorded the Schubert Unfinished four times. His first was an acoustic Philadelphia traversal in 1924 and this 1941 recording was his third. It never replicates the powerful string tone of the second of his recordings with the Philadelphians from 1927 and is in any case poorly recorded, with slightly scuffy surfaces that were apparently taken from the 33 1/3 lacquer originals. The Wagner acts as a balance between these two symphonic masterpieces – a gutsy performance.
Only 2 left in stock (more on the way). I do like Stokowski/Wagner as well because he does the lush sound of Wagner soooo well. He did not conduct Wagner in the opera house, but the Pearl releases of his Wagner during the Philadelphia period show us that he was introducing "bleeding chunks" of Wagner to a broad audience in America (through radio and recordings) that brought WWII era Americans to Wagner.
