This article is about the band Kronstadt Uprising. For information about the historical event see Kronstadt Uprising. Kronstadt Uprising were an anarcho-punk band from Southend-on-Sea, Essex, UK during the 1980s. Named in tribute to the events of the Kronstadt rebellion the band were formed in 1981 by Steve Pegrum joined by Spencer Blake, Paul Lawson and Andy Fisher (although in 1982 the band were to become a three-piece with Paul Lawson taking on both guitar and vocal duties)
Kronstadt Uprising took their name from the uprising at the Kronstadt Naval Base in 1921. Lenin referred to the incident as "the flash that lit up reality better than anything else". Formed in Southend-On Sea, Essex in 1981, Kronstadt Uprising survived six turbulent years with many members coming and going. However, far from being a negative factor, it produced a very stimulating and creative environment that lead to an ever evolving musical style that can be heard on this CD. Founder member Steve Pegrum was encouraged by the self-empowerment message and ethos of punk rock. So what to make of 'Insurrection', it is perhaps something only for die hards of punk music to truly enjoy, but the songs do go across boundries and in a snese with this album you are not judging it on individual songs, you are judging on its whole and within the context, of course songs have to be judged, but part of that.

Lenin denounced the Kronstadt Uprising as a plot instigated by the White Army and their European supporters. However, in private he realised that he was under attack from the left. Your evaluation of the Kronstadt Uprising of 1921 is basically incorrect. The best, most sacrificing sailors were completely withdrawn from Kronstadt and played an important role at the fronts and in the local Soviets throughout the country. What remained was the grey mass with big pretensions, but without political education and unprepared for revolutionary sacrifice. The country was starving. The Kronstadters demanded privileges. But it was in the first place an insurrection within the Bolshevik elite itself. Many of the victims would die shouting, "Long live the Communist International!" and "Long live the Constituent Assembly!" The tragedy began with a mass meeting of fifteen hundred sailors and workers on March 1, 1921.
