On that album, Monroe recorded a number of traditional fiddle tunes he had often heard performed by Vandiver. After the Monroe Brothers disbanded in 1938, Bill Monroe formed The Kentuckians in Little Rock, Arkansas, but the group only lasted for three months. Bill had wanted "Old Hickory" to become one of the original members of his "Blue Grass Boys", however William Hardin had to decline.

They played the Grand Ole Opry in 1939 and became wildly popular with traditional country music fans. At this time it was called old time mountain hillbilly music and it wasn't until 1965 that festivals needed a name for their shows and "Bluegrass" was chosen in honor of "Bill Monroe and the Blue Grass Boys.
