Live in Sant'Anna Arresi, 2004 is an album by American jazz saxophonist David S. Ware, a duo performance with pianist Matthew Shipp recorded in 2004 at Ai confini tra Sardegna e Jazz festival, but not issued until 2016 by AUM Fidelity label. It was the second volume in the David S. Ware Archive Series, after the expanded reissue of Birth of a Being.
Similarly, Matthew Shipp employs a type of unimaginable creative mysticism that transcends technique and peer comparisons with an approach and sound that is wholly his own. Live in Sant'Anna Arresi, 2004 showcases two masters-with a long working history-in a rare live duo performance. For almost twenty years Shipp, bassist William Parker and a succession of drummers (Marc Edwards, Whit Dickey, Susie Ibarra and Guillermo E. Brown), made up Ware's namesake quartet
Saxophonist and composer, David S. Ware (1949-2012), was one of the most original voices in modern jazz and his uncompromising approach to his art was deeply connected with a spiritual understanding of life. To Ware, playing and listening to music were different aspects of the essence of life. Ware left behind a rich discography and, fortunately, new musical treasures are still coming. One of them is a live recording from Sant'Anna Arresi with his or, the pianist, Matthew Shipp.
Live in Sant Anna Arresi, 2004 is the 2nd volume in AUM Fidelity s David S. Ware Archive Series, and the first release of the saxophone master in rare duo performance with fellow master of music, pianist Matthew Shipp. Though sharing 17 years together in the legendary David S. Ware Quartet (along with bassist William Parker and a series of drummers), Shipp recalls that he and Ware performed duo concerts perhaps six times at most in that period. Thankfully, on this latter-day occasion, their work together in this form was professionally recorded.

Live In Sant'Anna Arresi 2004. Though sharing seventeen years together in the legendary David S. Ware Quartet, Shipp recalls that he and Ware performed duo concerts perhaps six times at most in that period. This concert is one continuous long-form improvisation; it spans an incredibly wide range of approaches and dynamics. The ecstatic deep listening experience of free jazz performed at a highest level avails itself here in full. Their delighfully pithy "trading fours" encore to the concert is also included.
