Seefeel’s debut is rock through the lens of minimal techno (note that their follow-up Succour is even more so). The band is content with looping the same heavily distorted melodies for 7 minutes, adding and subtracting layers only now and then. After the heavy treatment of their instruments, only the drums and bass really sound like themselves - the guitars meld together into an ethereal, rippling haze. The textures are rich and sparkly, and the vibe is wonderfully mysterious, but also sunny. Unfortunately, without much breathing room - space - and dynamism, the loops can become claustrophobic. To have brought more variation within the tracks, and indeed between them (“Climatic Phase,” “Imperial” and “Plainsong” share prominent loops) could have been a great benefit. Those not looking for or expecting normal song structures, or chord progressions, will likely not find this problematic. The highlights here are “Plainsong,” the most “traditional” track, “Charlotte’s Mouth,” “Filter Dub” and “Imperial.”
