The Dukes of Dixieland was a New Orleans "Dixieland"-style revival band, originally formed in 1948 by brothers Frank Assunto, trumpet; Fred Assunto, trombone; and their father Papa Jac Assunto, trombone and banjo. Their first records featured Jack Maheu, clarinet; Stanley Mendelsohn, piano; Tommy Rundell, drums; and Barney Mallon, tuba and string bass.

In 1961, after the Dukes of Dixieland were lured away from Audio Fidelity by Columbia, the former company came out with two sampler albums taken from the Dukes' very busy four-year period with the label. The dozen Dixieland standards on this LP (which primarily sticks to warhorses) include "Wait Till the Sun Shines Nellie," "Hot Time in the Old Town Tonight," "The Saints" and "Bill Bailey.
