Kullervo, Op. 7, is a suite of symphonic movements by the Finnish composer Jean Sibelius. Although often referred to as a "choral symphony," the work avoids traditional symphonic structure and its five movements constitute a set of related but independent tone poems. The third and fifth movements make use of a men's chorus. The third, authorized by the composer for performance as an independent work, also calls for two soloists, a baritone and a mezzo-soprano

TITLE added to MP3 cart. Jean Sibelius: Kullervo, Op. 7 - Olli Kortekangas: Migrations. Exclusive Prime pricing. Kullervo is done a lot in Finland - seems to be their gala piece, like Beethoven's 9th or Mahler 2 - but less so abroad, most likely because of its Finnish character and, more important, the likely need a Finnish choir (though non-Finnish choirs have recorded it). It has great tunes that you want to hear over and over, and the entry of the men's choir in the third part ("Kullervo and his Sister") will send chills up your spine. The Minnesota Orchestra is an absolutely world-class ensemble, with a great partnership with Osmo Vanska. 7: I. Introduction: Allegro moderato - Minnesota Orchestra 02. 7: II. Grave Jean Sibelius; Minnesota Orchestra; Osmo Vänskä. With this 2017 double album, the Minnesota Orchestra under its Finnish music director Osmo Vänskä celebrates the 150th anniversary of what is sometimes called the "Great Migration" of Finns to the United States. The orchestra commissioned Olli Kortekangas to compose a work on the theme of migration, of a scale and nature suitable for performance alongside Jean Sibelius’s great Kullervo.
