Ira Nathaniel "Nate" Smith (born December 14, 1974) is an American drummer, songwriter, producer and three time Grammy nominee. Smith was born in Chesapeake, Virginia, and started playing drums at age 11, initially influenced by rock and funk music. At 16, he developed an interest in jazz after listening to Album of the Year by Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers. Smith studied media art and design at James Madison University.

Nathaniel Smith (1730 – 6 May 1794) was a naval officer, director of the Honourable East India Company and a politician who sat in the House of Commons variously between 1783 and 1794. Smith was the posthumous son of naval captain Nathaniel Smith of St Giles Cripplegate and his wife Anne Gould, daughter of James Gould. Smith joined the naval service of the Honourable East India Company and was appointed commander of the East-Indiaman Clinton in 1759. In 1765 he transferred to the Lord Camden.

Smith's quartet, which features rising star saxophone maverick Jon Irabagon, finds its way and brings these intriguing compositions to life without resorting to unnecessary fireworks. Smith wrote five of the seven pieces here, and each one possesses admirable traits. Daybreak And Then Dusk" starts things off, with Irabagon's swooning saxophone sliding over the group, but the followup, "Tortoise Pendant," is more memorable
