The Blues Band is a British blues band formed in 1979 by Paul Jones, former lead vocalist and harmonica player with Manfred Mann, and guitarist Tom McGuinness also of Manfred Mann and The Roosters. The band’s first line-up also included bassist Gary Fletcher, slide-guitarist Dave Kelly who had previously played with The John Dummer Band, Howling Wolf and John Lee Hooker and drummer Hughie Flint, of John Mayall's Blues Breakers and McGuinness Flint, the band he formed with Tom McGuinness.

This 2016 Blues Album Round-up features albums from the time-tested veterans, great stuff from the genre’s younger apprentices as well as a lovely dose of surprises. The rolling stones - blue and lonesome. King King is a four-piece band whose specialized brand of the blues comes with more than a hint of arena rock. They are loud and raw and relentlessly soulful. And their latest effort captures it all, inviting us right there in the middle of the screaming, dancing, smoking crowd. In addition to the usual cast of blues gods, the Finish chanteuse found influence from a wide range of sources. Mostly, I listened to old-soul and blues records – artists like Donny Hathaway, Aretha Franklin and Sam Cooke – so this idea of a blues album turned into a soul/blues album.
Climax Blues Band - Plays On (Parlophone 1969). These Staffordshire blues terriers sounded a bit too much like John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers on their first album but the follow-up, Plays On, branched out in several directions. The addition of a mellotron to the mix brings a progressive dimension to the sound, notably on Mum’s The Word based on Also Sprach Zarathustra (the 2001 theme). But there’s also Colin Cooper’s jazzy playing on the smoky instrumental Flight, the whiff of psychedelia on Hey Bab. nd the Latino-tinged Cubano Chant
