Beethoven Late Quartets, Vo. When people discuss the greatest contributions to the arts in Western civilization, names such as Shakespeare, da Vinci, and Beethoven inevitably arise. Proponents for Beethoven cite his five late quartets, which were the final works that he completed. In this first of three volumes, the Cypress String Quartet brings a fresh voice of humanity and clarity to these monumental works. Beethoven: The Late Quartets, Vo. Beethoven: Late String Quartets. I have the Busch, Takacs and the Lindsay (1st version)but these are the ones I always come back to. For me, there is such restraint and gravity in the playing- absolute seriousness and commitment. The performances are full of emotion and yet severely disciplined- there is no sentimentalism or romanticism. I love the timbre of the Italian Quartet's sound also. Its quite dry, not too much vibrato (given the date of recording)- a claret rather than a burgandy is perhaps a good analogy.
