Arthur Bliss, Zubin Mehta. Arthur Bliss, Zubin Mehta. Pomp and Circumstance, marches (5) for orchestra, Op. 39. 16. No. 1 in D major.
Enigma Variations are performed by Zubin Mehta and the LA Philharmonic, the Pomp and Circumstance Marches by Sir Arthur Bliss and the London Symphony, and Serenade for Strings by Sir Neville Marriner and the Academy of St. Marin-in-the-Fields. A whole lotta Sirs, isn't it? With all of those knights, you would expect performances fit for a King's ransom - and you get just that. The reason why this album has not received the attention it so urgently deserves is another enigma (no pun intended) in the world of music. This is one of the greatest Elgar discs. The Marches is characteristic Elgar in his prime. Here, the composer Arthur Bliss conducts them to great effect : It is obvious that the LSO responded well to their chief in this late 1950's recording. To quote the Elgar web info by Keith Hansen, "his performances stress the military aspect, coming across as quite jaunty and perky.

Sir Arthur Edward Drummond Bliss CH KCVO (2 August 1891 – 27 March 1975) was an English composer and conductor. Bliss's musical training was cut short by the First World War, in which he served with distinction in the army. In the post-war years he quickly became known as an unconventional and modernist composer, but within the decade he began to display a more traditional and romantic side in his music. In the 1920s and 1930s he composed extensively not only for the concert hall, but also for films and ballet . Serenade for Strings. Serenade for Strings may refer to: Serenade for Strings (Chadwick) (in F major).
The Pomp and Circumstance Marches (full title Pomp and Circumstance Military Marches), Op. 39, are a series of marches for orchestra composed by Sir Edward Elgar. They include some of Elgar's best-known compositions. The title is taken from Act III, Scene 3 of Shakespeare's Othello: Farewell the neighing steed and the shrill trump, The spirit-stirring drum, th'ear-piercing fife, The royal banner, and all quality, Pride, pomp, and circumstance of glorious war!
