Album · 2009 · 12 Songs. Her main accompanist on Trago is the pianist Chucho Valdés, a venerable Afro-Cuban jazz musician, and the two, along with other musicians, team up to perform songs associated with the legendary Mexican ranchera singer Chavela Vargas. Flamenco and ranchera are quite different, but both styles require passionate intensity, and Buika is more than up to the task of interpreting these classics. On Soledad, Buika is backed by an Afro-Cuban groove, with Valdés bringing an almost classical feel to some of his runs, while the gloomy Sombras gets a jazzy bolero reading.
El Último Trago is a 2009 album by Concha Buika and Chucho Valdés, produced by Javier Limón. Javier Limón describes the concept of the album as bringing together "Afro-Cuban Jazz idol" Chucho Valdés with "Afro-Flamenco Jazz" singer Buika, working on the ranchera songs originally sung by Costa Rican-Mexican Chavela Vargas. It features a note written by director Pedro Almodóvar, who had worked repeatedly with Vargas. Almodóvar made a glowing evaluation of the album, with an emphasis on Buika's renditions.
El Ultimo Trago - translated as "The Last Drink" - is as much a tribute to Mexican singer Chavela Vargas, a major influence on Buika. She's a passionate singer with a dusky, slightly raspy, thin, and gritty voice, but she sure can belt out a song like a great blues singer, or Cape Verdean contemporary Césaria Evora.
