This album is like soup. It's comforting, peaceful, filling and just feels good in your soul, yet the music (even though it's extremely dreamy) is still forceful and doesn't feel meaningless. The production and soundscapes created in these pieces are nothing short of delectable, like a small cozy fire being lit inside you, or a hug from a great friend. I'm not the biggest nerd when it comes to ambient music, but this is a compilation I really enjoyed. It's an album I hope to come back to when.

Saint-Saens's arrangement of the overture of BWV 29 is given an excellent treatment with just the right balance between Baroque and Romantic flavoring. The piano colors the ecstatic polyphony quite well. Lauriala showcases his reflective side in the exposition; d'Albert's arrangement is sufficient enough that one can hear the entrance of new voices.
It’s remarkable how artists from such vastly different musical backgrounds (the liner notes offer short histories for each, along with contextual explanations for each track) made music that fits into this sound world. Haruomi Hosono is a wide-ranging singer-songwriter with a clutch of eclectic albums who also made punky, danceable electro-pop with Yellow Magic Orchestra, and his track Original BGM, which closes the set, is 15 minutes of slow-crawling bliss, filled with long silences and simple, gradually unfolding melodies. The 2013 collection I Am the Center: Private Issue New Age Music in America 1950-1990, focused on obscure sounds, some of which initially circulated on cassette tapes in new age shops that stocked them alongside packs of incense, crystals, and books about mysticism.
