The recordings for the Contemporary label, with each album devoted to a single musical, are in a light appealing style aimed at popular taste. Earl Hines was born in Duquesne, Pennsylvania, 12 miles from the center of Pittsburgh, in 1903, his father, Joseph Hines, played cornet and was the leader of the Eureka Brass Band in Pittsburgh, his stepmother was a church organist. Hines intended to follow his father on cornet, but "blowing" hurt him behind the ears, whereas the piano did not; the young Hines took lessons in playing classical piano.

Earl Hines Plays Duke Ellington Volume Two is a compilation CD featuring recordings by pianist Earl Hines performing compositions by Duke Ellington on the New World label which follows the first volume in rereleasing tracks from LPs that Hines recorded for the Master Jazz label in sessions between 1971 and 1974.
