But Kultur has released an equally well danced 1971 Kirov production that corrects the deficiencies of this one - its stage and backdrops are brilliantly lit and its costumes and staging are vividly colorful - and adds an exciting orchestral performance plus sparkling sound. Clearly, it's The Stone Flower to pick.

The basic story, which Prokofiev adapted from a Ural fable, involves Danila (here played by Nikolai Dorokhov), a stone carver who - while he is accomplished enough technically - wishes to push himself ever further, harnessing the creative secrets of the gods to fashion a vase as ascetic and as elegant as one of nature's flowers.

Stone Flower was written in 1947-1948 but not staged. In 1948 the Stalinist council headed by Andrei Shadov denounced the Russian "Big Four"; Prokofiev, Shostakovich, Khatchaturian and Miaskovski as "modernist" and irrelavant to the people. It was forbidden to perform any of his music in the USSR as well as some other "Big Four" music. The Stone Flower is filled with elements of Russian folklore. The libretto is simple, love triangle between Danila (character male homosexuality in Russia or think) that Katerina loves, but has fallen by Copper Mountain and ends up going for a walk with her.
