Renowned as the Queen of Fado, Amalia Rodrigues came to embody that melancholy style of Portguese music, rising to international fame in the 1950s and '60s. Although Rodrigues started out as a singer in Lisbon, she had a long stint in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and it was here that she made her initial recordings during the mid '40s. This collection presents 20 tracks from these early sessions, and while the sound quality is limited by the technology of the time, the performances are excellent, particularly on the lilting "Maria Da Cruz" and the vibrant "Passei Por Voce.
