Enthrone Darkness Triumphant is the third studio album by Norwegian black metal band Dimmu Borgir, released on 30 May 1997 through Nuclear Blast Records. It was the band's first release through Nuclear Blast. This is the last release to feature keyboardist Stian Aarstad and the first with bassist Nagash. In 2002, a deluxe CD version was released with bonus material.

Oh, well, this is an interesting pair, Cradle of Filth and Dimmu Borgir the same day, isn’t it? Anyway.This is when Dimmu Borgir started to get serious, we have to say. Their previous two albums were two prototypes of intimal proto-Depressive Black Metal that lacked excess and relied too much on individual fantasies: by comparison, their third album Enthroned Darkness Triumphant, is a completely different band than before! Ok, Stian Tomt Thoresen, aka Shagarth, joined the line-up and his vocals are even more charismatic than that of Dani Filth (without much effort, also), but the material on this album is not only professionally produced, but also very inspired and includes plenty of hooks, along with the grainy guitar sound and the occasional palm-muted section to favor headbanging. Compared to Cradle of Filth, the band tend to use more “decadent” harmonies in E/A-minor with swift bass leads in order to recreate a magniloquent atmosphere, or, to mockingly echo back the title, “pretending the throne of darkness”. Though the words may seem like clichés, the plastic-drenched, ultra-professional production of the album (courtesy of Nuclear Blast, obviously) is very suited to the music, giving it an aura of being isolated in a place far from time and space: another small difference is that there are less “growling vocals” and female cameos. The joint of the clicking drum pedal and the guitar picking creates the false illusion of “Thrash Metal hammering” that would have become a rule for Extreme Metal from twenty years on, more or less.The symphonic citations are extremely scarce, and regard more the occasional contrapuntal keyboard arpeggio than anything else (see the middle section of “In Death’s Embrace”): closing cut “A Succubus in Rapture” is the only slower moment, one where the band prove that also they had strong Fields of the Nephilim influences, even more than Cradle of Filth (and a song whose excellent hook is shamelessly plagiarized from Covenant's "Night of the Blackwinds"!). The deluxe edition of the album includes also a re-recording of “Raabjørn Speiler Draugheimens Skodde” and the bonus track “Moonchild Domain”. Overall, this album is more or less on par with Dusk and Her Embrace, both are many times better than Limbonic Art’s Moon in the Scorpio and Emperor’s In the Nightside Eclipse. Personal rankings aside, this is an excellent album and the adapt way to get introduced to the band and the genre in general, despite some less than ideal moments ("Tormentor of Christian Souls").Highlights: “Mourning Palace”, “In Death’s Embrace”, “The Night’s Masquerade”, “A Succubus in Rapture”.
