Ballads is a jazz album by John Coltrane. It was recorded in December 1961 and 1962, and released on the Impulse! label in 1963 as A-32 (mono) and later AS-32 (stereo). Critic Gene Lees stated that the quartet had never played the tunes before

Throughout John Coltrane's discography there are a handful of decisive and controversial albums that split his listening camp into factions. Generally, these occur in his later-period works such as Om and Ascension, which push into some pretty heady blowing. As a contrast, Ballads is often criticized as too easy and as too much of a compromise between Coltrane and Impulse! (the two had just entered into the first year of label representation)

The spinechillingly emotional saxophonist Albert Ayler said of his 1960s contemporaries John Coltrane and Pharoah Sanders: Trane was the father. Pharoah was the son. I was the holy ghost. That sax triumvirate have many heirs (notably Kamasi Washington), but the spiritually restless Coltrane will always be the master

Disc: 1. 1. Say It (Over and Over Again). One of the most beautiful collections of music ever. If I had but a few moments left to live, I would like to have this music playing softly in the background as I made my transition. 3 people found this helpful.
