Born poor in Bakersfield, California, Haggard had a rebellious youth, eventually landing in San Quentin State Prison for attempted burglary. He received a Kennedy Center Honor in 2010, and released his final album, a collaboration with Willie Nelson, in 2015. He was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2008, but kept performing through surgeries and other setbacks. Haggard's health had been declining for a while, and he had canceled several recent concert dates, according to The Tennessean. He was diagnosed with pneumonia last year and was hospitalized for a stretch of time, and according to TMZ, he told his friends he would die on his birthday.
