Album · 2005 · 3 Songs. 15: III. Rondo (Allegro Non Troppo). Sir Simon Rattle, Berlin Philharmonic & Krystian Zimerman. Released: Jan 1, 2005. 2005 Deutsche Grammophon GmbH, Berlin. More By Berlin Philharmonic.

Performers: Krystian Zimerman, piano Berliner Philharmoniker Simon Rattle, conductor. In the notes for this release, pianist Krystian Zimerman has distinctly unkind things to say about his 1983 recording of Brahms' First Concerto, complaining first about the weak piano and then about the muffled recording. About the eccentric conductor - the incredibly slow Leonard Bernstein - the idiomatic orchestra - the unbelievably beautiful Vienna Philharmonic - or his own sub par playing - heavy and unbearably ponderous - Zimerman is understandably silent.

Intense Majestic Reverent Tragic. Krystian Zimerman, Simon Rattle.

Krystian Zimerman is someone who looks for the truth behind the notes with a ruthless unwillingness to compromise – which is why all of his recordings are a precious rarity. Here, we present his performance of Brahms’s Piano Concerto No. 1 from June 2015. The performance with Sir Simon Rattle is as multifaceted as Brahms’s work: floating poetically, spirited and forceful, but always infused with the dark introspection of late Romanticism.

Krystian Zimerman recorded both the Brahms concertos for Deutsche Grammophon more than 20 years ago with Leonard Bernstein and the Vienna Philharmonic. By his own stellar standards those were disappointing performances, undermined by Bernstein's over-sentimental approach, which jarred with the purity and restraint of Zimerman's playing

Krystian Zimerman (born 5 December 1956, Zabrze) is a Polish pianist and conductor who has been described as one of the finest living pianists. In 1975, he won the IX International Chopin Piano Competition. Criticism of US policy. On 26 April 2009 Zimerman vowed to his audience at Los Angeles's Walt Disney Concert Hall that, in protest of America's placement of a missile defense shield in Poland, this would be his final appearance in the United States.

The Berlin Philharmonic? Still the Berlin Phil, no matter what you may have read about their relationship with Rattle, and this is music-making at the very highest level. Any new recording from pianist Krystian Zimerman is a rare event, so there's bound to be deep joy that he's back with a major new concerto recording. Then perhaps a touch of frustration as you realise that it's actually a work he's recorded before: Brahms's Piano Concerto No. 1.
