Listeners who love Sibelius' music have long ago come to terms with the unavoidable fact that the Finnish master wrote reams of fairly trivial music and a fair amount of frankly terrible music. For every Second Symphony, there are Press Pageants aplenty. For every Fifth Symphony, there are pages of Impromptus and Humoresques for piano. For every Seventh Symphony, there are shelves of Dances characteristique for violin and piano.

Osmo Antero Vänskä (born 28 February 1953) is a Finnish conductor, clarinetist and composer. He started his musical career as an orchestral clarinetist with the Turku Philharmonic (1971–76). He then became the principal clarinet of the Helsinki Philharmonic from 1977 to 1982. During this time, he started to study conducting with Jorma Panula at the Sibelius Academy, where his classmates included Esa-Pekka Salonen and Jukka-Pekka Saraste.

The Sound of Sibelius. Digital Booklet: The Sound of Sibelius. Something like Tulen Synty could easily have replaced Spring Song. Sibelius in fact composed numerous vocal, choral and solo vocal works for singer and piano. The Kullervo symphony is a bit of a monumental work and more difficult for the beginner Sibelius fan. I've grown to like Wood Nymph more after a couple of years with this disc. In fact it is probably the most novel track here.

COMPOSER: Jean Sibelius. ORCHESTRA: Lahti Symphony Orchestra. CONDUCTOR: Osmo Vänskä. More from this artist. Tell us what you think.

As on the previous disc, it is Osmo Vänskä and the Lahti Symphony Orchestra who breathe life into these often forgotten works. 01. Song of the Earth, O. 3 (Jordens Sång) Text: Jarl Hammer.
