Calling the band "a scourge but now a saviour of heavy rock," before Chris Ayers of Exclaim! wrote that "Ugly Kid Joe prove that their catchy hooks and solid vocals are cool to like again on Uglier Than They Used Ta B.

I was pretty stoked about the Ugly Kid Joe reunio. ntil I heard their 2012 EP, Stairway to Hell, which sounded like demos for an UKJ wannabe, which is weird, because there haven’t been any UKJ wannabes since like 1993. Still, I am choosing to remain optimistic about the band’s first full-length in nineteen years, Uglier Than They Used Ta Be, mostly because the title and album art play heavily on my nostalgia for 1991’s As Ugly as They Wanna Be AND act as an accurate representation of my physical state in their respective years of release.

What a return from this unlucky band. After arriving in the madness of "Everything About You" the band went on to release 1995's Menace To Sobriety album - an LP so strong it was tipped as an album of the year contender - only to inexplicably drop off the radar completely despite their strongest work to date.I never thought they would reappear, but here we have it.Uglier Than They Used Ta Be incorporates everything you'd expect from an Ugly Kid Joe album - bouncy riffs, heavy guitars, but underlined with a sly, poppy attitude and a deep love of old-school hard rock. This does not defeat Menace To Sobriety as their strongest work, yet it is streets ahead of where the line of expectation was drawn in the sand. The weak points come from the fact that this is largely the line-up which was responsible for 1996's self-made album Motel California, meaning they occasionally roam into dull, spooky grunge-like acoustics which don't really go anywhere in the album's slower tracks, while on some of the rock tracks restrain Whitfield Crane's vocals to almost a spoken word, never challenging the range he has as a proven rock singer. And the fact that the band insist upon producing Whitfield Crane's howling raspy vocals into what sometimes resembles a latter-day Ozzy Osbourne, which is not the sound he is known for (listen to Tomorrow's World for an example of his ability). The plus points outweigh these negatives, however.Standout tracks include "Hell Ain't Hard To Find," "The Enemy," "Bad Seed" and a surprisingly venomous cover of "Ace of Spades."In a year of strong rock albums, Uglier Than They Used Ta Be is one of the surprise packages which is well worth a listen.

Не самое плохое возвращение. Довольно современно звучит, есть хорошие песни - The Enemy, например.
