Haydn: The Seven Last Words. Die Sieben letzten Worte unseres Erlösers am Kreuze (The Seven Last Words of Christ on the Cross), for string quartet, H. 3/50-56. 1. Introduction: Maestoso et Adagio. Fitzwilliam String Quartet. 3. Sonata II: Grave e cantabile. 4. Sonata III: Grave. 8. Sonata VII: Largo.
The Seven Last Words. A passionate and sensitive performance of Haydn's famous work The Seven Last Words. This is the debut Linn recording by the Fitzwilliam String Quartet, an ensemble that gained international fame when they became the first ever group to perform and record all fifteen of Shostakovich's quartets. The Fitzwilliam String Quartet perform here on original instruments.
Haydn created his string quartet version of The Seven Last Words from the original orchestral version. Like the later fortepiano adaptation, the effect is predictably thinner and less pungent - a problem he was to redress in his final choral version.
The Emerson Quartet might be said to bring the best of both worlds, combining the Classical purity of the Mosaiques with the Lindsay's Romantic warmth. Technically speaking theses players are very much in a class of their own and DG's recording (detailed, yet gently cushioned) is also in the luxury class. Cast: Emerson String Quartet: Eugene Drucker, violin Philip Setzer, violin Lawrence Dutton, viola David Finckel, cello.
Joseph Haydn wrote sixty-eight string quartets. The number was previously thought to be eighty-three, but this includes some arrangements and spurious works. 1 Opus 1 (1762–64) List by keys.
Solo & Chamber Music. Haydn: Seven Last Words (for string quartet). I also have versions for solo piano and a version for orchestra by Jordi Savall. I haven't heard The Festetics Q. in this piece though (recommended above by Heliogabo), but what I have heard from their big complete Haydn box on this site has been very good.
