Ricci’s recording of Sibelius’s Violin Concerto falls between Jascha Heifetz’s two (1935 and 1959) and straddles the demonic energy of the first and the icy mystery of the second. Decca’s engineers (Cyril Windebank and Gordon Parry, in this case) reproduce the sharp bite of the brass and clarity of the strings. The Sérénade mélancolique may not wail with Heifetz’s intensity, but it’s moving nonetheless, and Ricci plays the Scherzo with edgy energy. 47 Tchaikovsky, Serenade Melancolique, Op. 26; Scherzo, Op. 42 No. With the London Symphony, Sir Malcolm Sargent, cond. Tchaikovsky, Violin Concerto in D Major, Op. 35. With the London Symphony, Piero (Pierino) Gamba, cond. The album includes extensive notes and an informative mini-biography on Ricci. Among the violin concertos, the Sibelius is the standout performance, easily among the few best ever put on record, with outstanding accompaniment provided by Fjeldstad. The Tchaikovsky and Katchaturian are very good but not quite at the level of the Sibelius. The Tchaikovsky is a little laid-back and the last movement of the Katchaturian is not at the tempo Ricci wanted because Fistoulari (usually an excellent conductor) insisted on beating through 3 instead of 1, thereby slowing the tempo somewhat.
And Oivin Fjeldstad is the perfect partner for Ricci in more ways than one in this wonderfully lively recording: thanks to his training as both a conductor and a violinist, he ensures a perfect balance between soloist and orchestra; and as a Norwegian he is, of course, completely au fait with Scandinavian repertoire, and guarantees - both here and in other recordings with the London Symphony Orchestra - a truly nordic touch. Protection Each record is protected within its record sleeve by a white vellum anti-dust sleeve. The violin had got me completely under it's spell; for ten years it was my greatest wish to become a great violin virtuoso. confessed Finland's national composer Jean Sibelius in later years. Although he began a career as a violin virtuoso too late, as a composer he profited enormously from his intimate knowledge of the instrument and the possibilities it offered.
