STANLEY COWELL is a avant-garde jazz, fusion post bop music artist. Thanks to snobb for the updates. STANLEY COWELL Online Videos.
Stanley Cowell’s recording career of forty-five years to date, including founding the ’70s the post-Bop/spiritual jazz label Strata East with trumpeter Charles Tolliver, combining solo and group concert performance and recording with a university teaching role. At latest look, one still with us. Music. Time for some un-smooth jazz. Musically always interesting to push the boundaries, see if they have moved further out, over time, they usually they have. Then there is the more serious Black Lion cover which loses points for failing to design-in any visual cross-reference to the album title, like how the spacey cover neatly counterpoints several circular design elements within a square frame. Nothing either brilliant or at all circular about the Black Lion.
About Stanley Cowell. Cowell is a technically dazzling pianist who began his career playing avant-leaning Post Bop in the late 1960s, though he's equally impressive when putting his own spin on earlier Bebop or even Stride numbers. He's done some remarkably inside-out standard reworkings over the years, and is especially absorbing in unaccompanied settings. About Stanley Cowell.
If you feel like you lost track of Stanley Cowell, you are not alone. From the late 1960s into the ’80s, he was a significant piano voice who made respected records on a label he co-founded, Strata-East. Then, for over 30 years, he committed to an academic career. His public performances became infrequent. Between 1999 and 2010, he didn’t put out a record under his own name. But Cowell, now 76, has resurfaced. No Illusions is his sixth album in eight years on SteepleChase, and his third with the world-class rhythm section of bassist Jay Anderson and drummer Billy Drummond

A superb modern jazz pianist, Stanley Cowell is a highly regarded artist whose work often pushes the boundaries of forward-thinking hard bop without ever falling into completely avant-garde territory. Born in Toledo, Ohio in 1941, Cowell began studying piano around age four and first became interested in jazz after gaining exposure to the music of pianist Art Tatum, a family friend. After high school, he attended both the Oberlin College Conservatory and the University of Michigan, during which time he also gained valuable experience playing with Rahsaan Roland Kirk. In 2017 he delivered his 15th album for SteepleChase, No Illusions, featuring saxophonist/flutist Bruce Williams, bassist Jay Anderson, and drummer Billy Drummond. Back to the Beautiful.
