After beginning a three-album Bruch series with the little-known Violin Concerto No. 3, Op. 58, Liebeck here takes up one of the composer's most famous works, the Violin Concerto No. 1 in G minor, Op. 26. The rest of the program, though, advances the aim of Hyperion's Romantic Violin Concerto series, which is to recover forgotten works of the period. The little Romance in A minor, Op. 42 and the Serenade in A minor, Op.

Max Bruch's Violin Concerto No. 1 is the daddythe most popular ever written. Much recorded, Jack Liebeck turns in a dazzling performance of youthful vigour, prefacing the Concerto with the gorgeous Serenade and a Romance. At the age of 30, Max Bruch wrote a violin concerto that would still be sitting at the top of radio listeners polls more than a century later; he spent the rest of his career trying to repeat the success, while kicking himself for selling the rights . Three shorter concertante works for violin and orchestra complete the album (Bruch thought the Adagio appassionato one of his best works) which marks volume 21 in our highly regarded Romantic Violin Concerto series. His playing is virtually flawless in its technical ease, scintillating articulateness and purity of tone-very much, in fact, like James Ehnes’s dazzling CBC recording. Liebeck is most impressive in the concerto’s introspective passages: the plaintive opening, for example, and also in the first movement’s coda, where he finds a touching vulnerability. Like Ehnes, though, he’s more than a touch too sober.
