Tim Hagans & NDR Bigband album Under the Influence. With few exceptions-a notable one being Shadows, his directorial debut, which employed the music of Mingus-the films of the late John Cassavetes were light on musical content. Cassavetes wanted his actors to dominate the scenes in which they appeared, and considered anything that would divert attention from their performances a distraction. In essence, the trumpeter Tim Hagans was presented with the gift of a blank slate when he was commissioned by Germany’s NDR Bigband to compose music with Cassavetes’ works in mind.
Tim Hagans writes: John Cassavetes, often referred to as the father of independent film in America, was a groundbreaking filmmaker. FACES UNDER THE INFLUENCE draws inspiration from characters in the Cassavetes' films SHADOWS, FACES, MINNIE & MOSKOWITZ, HUSBANDS, A WOMAN UNDER THE INFLUENCE, and THE KILLING OF A CHINESE BOOKIE, and also from the dynamic and uncompromising character of Cassavetes himself, a true maverick and visionary. John Cassavetes worked as an actor to finance his incredibly powerful films.

Faces Under The Influence, A Jazz Tribute To John Cassavetes was commissioned by the NDR Bigband. It is an exceptional orchestra. The band swings, roars and tips, and is technically impressive and supremely nuanced. Every musician is a soloist and the combination of their innovative and distinct voices make this ensemble a true jazz band. I have collaborated with the band many times and knowing the band so well, composed this suite with each musicians' sound and vibe in mind. Tim Hagans, New York City, 2017.
