CODEX CHANTILLY vo. This recording, the third CD of Tetraktys’ Chantilly codex project, contains the book’s two most famous works. These are the two Baude Cordier picture songs, and they are famous more for how they look than for how they sound. Currently bound at the start of the music section of the manuscript, one, Belle bonne sage, is notated on staves drawn in the shape of a heart, and the other, Tout par compas, is notated on staves drawn in the shape of a circle. These beautiful, playful pages are two of only four chansons notated in picture form to have survived from the middle ages.
Bibliothèque du Musée Condé 564 Tetraktys - Kees Boeke I: Etcetera 1900 II: Etcetera 1905 III: Etcetera 1917. The three volumes were recorded over a period of 8 years, and there are personnel changes from volume to volume, so perhaps these items should be listed separately. However, I've opted to keep them together. Similar to the discussion of the Ferrara Ensemble program, this is not even Kees Boeke's first series of Ars Subtilior recordings, as he participated in Mala Punica with Pedro Memelsdorff, as well as other albums intersecting this repertory. Here the concepts continue to refine, to the point that it's probably safe to say that these are the most detailed interpretations yet, really bringing out individual facets of the different songs.

The Chantilly Codex (Chantilly, Musée Condé MS 564) is a manuscript of medieval music containing pieces from the style known as the Ars subtilior. It is held in the museum at the Château de Chantilly in Chantilly, Oise. Most of the compositions in the Chantilly Codex date from ca. 1350–1400. There are 112 pieces total, mostly by French composers, and all of them polyphonic.
