Hot Rocks 1964–1971 is the first compilation album of Rolling Stones music released by former manager Allen Klein's ABKCO Records (who gained control of the band's Decca/London material in 1970) after the band's departure from Decca and Klein. Released in late 1971, it proved to be The Rolling Stones' biggest-selling release of their career and an enduring and popular retrospective. All songs by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, except where noted.

The only flaw was that it didn't give a good look at the Stones' full musical history, ignoring their early blues and psychedelic eras. There are also some anomalies in Hot Rocks' history for the collector - the very first pressings included an outtake of "Brown Sugar" featuring Eric Clapton that was promptly replaced. This is an exciting assembly of material.

Hot Rocks makes an open and shut case for the Stones’ greatness, beginning with “Time is On My Side” and plowing through such instant ‘60s classics as “Satisfaction,” “Get Off Of My Cloud,” “19th Nervous Breakdown,” “Ruby Tuesday,’ “Jumping Jack Flash,” “Honky Tonk Women,” and “Gimme Shelter,” several of which were never previously available on LP. From the band’s early British Invasion singles through their transformation as rock’s “bad boys,” this collection chronicles the era’s ups and downs (“Mother’s Little Helper”), its sexism (“Under My Thumb”), its sexual liberation (“Let Spend the Night Together”), its undercurrents of violence (“Jumping Jack Flash,” “Street Fightin’ Man,” “Brown Sugar”) and its suspicion of hope (“You Can’t Always Get What You Want”).

This compilation is missing "Lady Jane". if it had that song, I would need no other stones compilation

From the moment I saw the Rolling Stones on the Dick Cavett Show back in 1972, when I was 12, I was sold. The band might go on until someone dies, but this was definitely their most successful era of music. From their blues beginnings and ending as the 1960s began to fade away, this is the collection that any serious Stones fan would want. The only tune that seems to be missing is Monkey Man. A great collection.
