Its members make high-energy, high-gloss documentary films that bridge Africa and the African diaspora. But despite its flagship medium, Crudo Volta is, at its core, all about sound. The album is a musical skinny dip into a warm lagoon-which is to say, no previous experience with African club music necessary. The strongest tracks on Taxi Sampler 01 come from two better-known artists, Rvdical the Kid and Ethiopian Records. In Tigist, the Addis Ababa-born Ethiopian Records opens with dueling synth swirls and a heaving drone, then builds with organic complements: palmed drums and a reedy flute.

Seventies and '80s funk compilations are a dime a dozen, but usually turn out very good just because of the high quality of the music at the time. Spirit of Funk is no exception, featuring wonderful artists such as the Meters, Bobby Womack, even Jamiroquai. Plus, with such classics as Curtis Mayfield's "Pusher Man" and Earth Wind & Fire's "Shining Star," it is hard not to recommend the album despite some of the lesser songs sprinkled throughout. There are better compilations out there, but this is still a pretty good album overall.
