BEETHOVEN: Thirtythree Variations on Waltz by Diabelli (Op. 120). Charles Rosen, piano. Peters International PLE 042. Beethoven conceived a similar ending for his final piano sonata, written a year before. But whereas the sonata etherealizes for good, the body of the Diabelli Variations is bonier, and cannot. Instead, it reconsolidates to launch a heroic rebirth. He says so himself in his characteristically absorbing album notes: No other work of Beethoven is so informed with the comic spirit: No other displays so many varieties of his humor. Mr. Rosen chooses to call attention to Beethoven's humor not through underlining, but by elucidating the juxtapositions that create it. His method is to present the notes, rhythms and dynamics with such chiseled clarity that every oddity registers, and the gruff jokester we sometimes imagine Beethoven to be is replaced by an ironic, civilized comedian.
