Tales Out of Time is an album by Peter Brötzmann, Joe McPhee, Kent Kessler and Michael Zerang recorded in 2002 and released on the Swiss HatHut label in 2004. Studio album by. Peter Brötzmann, Joe McPhee, Kent Kessler and Michael Zerang. Retrieved April 28, 2015.
Brötzmann has designed most of his album covers. He taught himself to play clarinets, then saxophones; he is also known for playing the tárogató. Among his first musical partnerships was with double bassist Peter Kowald. For Adolphe Sax, Brötzmann's first recording, was released in 1967 and featured Kowald and drummer Sven-Åke Johansson. In 1968 Machine Gun, an octet recording, was released. The album was self-produced under his BRO record label imprint and sold at concerts, but it was later marketed by FMP. In 2007 Atavistic reissued Machine Gu. .Peter Brötzmann, Joe McPhee, Kent Kessler & Michael Zerang. Tales Out of Time (HatHut, 2002 ). Guts (Okka Disc, 2005). The Damage Is Done (2009). Peter Brötzmann/William Parker/Michael Wertmüller. Peter Brötzmann & Walter Perkins.
ber-lunged German saxophonist Peter Brötzmann teamed up with American vanguard legend Joe McPhee (who plays alto, tenor, trumpet, and pocket cornet here), bassist Kent Kessler, and drummer Michael Zerang (four-tenths of the Tentet Brötzmann toured and recorded with in the late '90s) for a single day of exchanging tunes and improvising in June 2002. McPhee and Brötzmann are perfect foils for one another on the front line.

Personnel: Joe McPhee - trumpet, alto saxophone, tenor saxophone Peter Brotzmann - alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, clarinet, tarogato Kent Kessler - double bass Michael Zerang - drums. This live date features legendary free jazz pioneers Peter Brotzmann and Joe McPhee, and Chicago's leading rhythm section, bassist Kent Kessler and drummer Michael Zerang. The four also make up 4/10 of Brötzmann's Chicago Tentet, maybe the most successful large new music jazz ensemble ever assembled. This quartet has released two previous recordings, Tales Out Of Time (hatOLOGY, 2004) and Guts (Okka, 2007), with The Damage Is Done's two discs recorded live at Alchemia in Krakow, Poland in March of 2008. While the players can (and do) perform volatile energy jazz here, their preference is for music that's dissectible enough for the players to be distinguished in parts and direction.
