Woman is the fifth studio album by American singer Jill Scott. It was released on July 24, 2015, through Blues Babe Records and Atlantic Records. The album debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200 chart, with first-week sales of 58,000 copies in the United States. Lighthouse" contains a sample of "Ready Set Loop", as performed by SBTRKT. Fool's Gold" contains a sample of "Evening Star", as performed by Yutaka Yokokura.

After the 2011 album The Light of the Sun, Jill Scott advanced her acting career with roles in Steel Magnolias, Baggage Claim, and With This Ring. She also transferred her Blues Babe label from Warner Bros. to Atlantic and worked on her fifth proper studio album. A month ahead of its release, just after the second single reached the public, Hidden Beach just happened to issue Golden Moments, a compilation of highlights from Scott's "Words and Sounds" era. Should there be a second Jill Scott anthology, several cuts from Woman would make for obvious selections.

I’m not sure why that matters, except for the fact that this album, as most from the soul music genre, is enveloped around the concept of romance. Almost every track touches on those kinds of relationships. Even the first song has the singer getting Prepared for a future beau.

Jill Scott's voice is familiar like hair being braided on a stoop, like a fire hydrant pouring out into the street, like a slow summer. Woman, her fifth studio album, is slow in the way that the familiar is slow: we already know what to expect. With Scott, it's mom-and-pop, all-you-can-eat R&B; sexy fun for grown folk over the age of 40, like speed dating at church.

A great, satisfying, varied outing from Scott, who never disappoints. The wealth of experiences, musical styles, vocal stylings and attitudes she delivers in the space of one album is astounding. What's even more impressing is that she nails it all. She's the hurt, determined lover, her hair in a mess, in "You Don't Know", a scorching blues cover, in which she sounds so tormented and heartfelt you can't but answer "like hell I did" when she begins by asking "did you ever know what it is to be hurt?", even if you really didn't. She's an R&B Top 20 modern chanteuse with the radio-ready "Fool's Gold". She's hilarious, sassy and brassy in the excellent "Closure", backed by an outsanding rhythm section, and an astute understanding of how to get back at underperforming men: with a punch to the stomach. "Run Run Run" and "Coming to You" are high energy soul throwbacks, "Can't Wait" has a light Reggae tint and good guitar work.Sure, it's not musically unified. Jumping from genre to genre, even masterfully so, makes it feel more like a collection of moods and ideas rather than a well-thought out statement, and this is what might make it just short of a perfect album. No real harm in that, though, as "Woman" is so enjoyable, and Scott is such a rare, smart, classy singer, that one can't honestly wish for anything more nowadays.
