Ralph Vaughan Williams: The Early Chamber Music.
Though most of the chamber works in this revelatory collection were, until the 1990s kept under wraps, they deserve revival. On the first of the two discs the Piano Quintet of 1903 opens with sharp discords, and then whirls you into a vigorous movement with French overtones. The String Quartet of 1898 sounds more like the RVW we know, and again his mastery in handling a difficult medium is clear - especially in the Quintet for the unusual combination of piano, clarinet, horn, violin and cello.
The Nash Ensemble plays these stunning miniatures with all the freshness and excitement of a new discovery' (The Strad). Performer: The Nash Ensemble Ian Brown, Paul Watkins, Elizabeth Wexler, Louise Williams, Marianne Thorsen Composer: Ralph Vaughan Williams.
Vaughan Williams’s chamber music has been largely overshadowed by his orchestral and choral works, which is unfortunate since within it are fine works, as heard in the collection gathered on this CD. The short piano piece The Lake in the Mountains was extracted by him from the film score for 49th Parallel, his first venture into the genre. They are portrayed in unsympathetic terms and Powell wrote in his autobiography A Life in the Movies that the propaganda purpose of the film was to alarm the Americans and bring them into the war quickly. For one scene, ‘The Lake in the Mountains’, Vaughan Williams decided to score the music for solo piano. It introduces and underpins dialogue between Howard, who portrays an idealist studying native Indian customs, and Portman, the leader of the Germans.

George Gershwin and Aaron Copland are both well known in the concert hall, but we rarely hear works other than film scores from Bernard Herrmann and Franz Waxman. Bernard Herrmann is represented here by a clarinet quintet, titled Souvenirs de Voyage, his last concert piece
