Work Song is a near-classic by cornetist Nat Adderley. Adderley utilizes a cornet-cello-guitar front line with Sam Jones and Wes Montgomery, along with a top-notch rhythm section pianist including Bobby Timmons, Percy Heath, or Keter Betts on bass and drummer Louis Hayes. First up is a fine early performance of his greatest hit, "Work Song

By far the strongest and best-known entry in Nat Adderley's catalog, "Work Song" is marked throughout by the bright, lyrical sound of Adderley's cornet. Even beyond the classic title track, there's a lot to enjoy here; "Pretty Memory", with its shifting rhythms, Wes Montgomery's delicate touch on "Mean to Me", Sam Jones' terrific bass work on "Fallout" and "My Heart Stood Still", the killer horn riffs and groove on "Sack of Woe", Adderley's graceful lines on "Violets for your furs", the interplay between Adderley, Heath and Hayes on "Scrambled Eggs"...there's really something special to listen for on every track. This is near-flawless stuff, my only nitpick being the relatively short running time of most of the tracks (with the exception of "My Heart Stood Still", the rest clock in at five minutes or less, sometimes much less), as it would be interesting to hear what might have resulted if the players had been given a little room to flesh out and more fully develop some of the great ideas they were putting down, but what's here is still top-notch mainstream Hard Bop at its most easygoing and accessible.
