The Vibrations were a smooth harmonizing soul group in the tradition of the Temptations and the Delfonics. Originally known as the Jayhawks, the Vibrations were notable for being equally proficient with smooth ballads, such as ‘Oh Cindy’ (1962), and exuberant dance tunes like ‘Sloop Dance’ (1964). Following a string of minor hits in the late 60s, they temporarily disbanded just prior to recording Taking A New Step, with the lead single Wind up toy revitalising their good fortunes. The Vibrations briefly broke up in 1971 whereupon Richard had a short stay with the Temptations. I guess Taking A New Step is the fruits of their reunion, and musically I believe the LP title conveys their new direction aptly. Wind up toy is a song I am familiar with and is a firm favourite with the Northern Soul crowd.
The Vibrations were an African-American soul vocal group from Los Angeles, California, active from the mid-1950s to 1976. Most notable among the group's hit singles were "My Girl Sloopy" (1964) and "Love in Them Thar Hills" (1968). The quintet's members included Don Bradley, Carl Fisher, Dave Govan, James Johnson and Ricky Owens. The group initially began recording as The Jay Hawks, and had a hit in 1956 with "Stranded in the Jungle" (US. The Vibrations briefly broke up in 1971. At this time, Owens became a member of The Temptations, although he was let go after his first few engagements. Owens and the other Vibrations regrouped and continued, eventually become a nightclub act in the mid 1970s, before officially dissolving the group in 1976. Ricky Owens died in 1996. Carl Fisher resides in Los Angeles, today, and is still singing and songwriting.
The Vibrations were a smooth harmonizing R&B group in the tradition of the Temptations, the Stylistics, and the Delfonics; in the 1960s they scored a few regional chart hits on the West Coast (one of which, "Peanut Butter," was released under the group name the Marathons), but never landed the national hit they sought. The group cut an album in 1972 (released in the United States on Mandala and in the . on RCA) on the strength of the single "Wind Up Toy," and the set - reissued in 2002 with a shuffled track lineup as Taking a New Step - documents a group with fine.
