ロフィール: English tenor vocalist, born 9 July 1963 in Crewe, Cheshire, England. Peter Warlock - John Mark Ainsley, Roger Vignoles - Songs By Peter Warlock ‎(CD, Album).

6 people found this helpful. Format: Audio CD. After reading the hatchet job done on Amanda Pitt, I revisited this album just see what it was that I was missing. I count four selections (Over the Mountains, Little Moth, Charle is My Darling, and Ca' the yowes to the knowes) where I would have preferred to hear another singer handling the duties. Look for the John Mark Ainsley/Lisa Milne recording of Quilter songs & arias.

I don’t think there’s much I can write about the performances here other than that I can’t imagine better ones. Both singer and pianist seem wholly attuned to the variety of moods Warlock conjures in his songs. Taken as a whole, this record is the finest Warlock song anthology I can conceive of. It is generous in proportion, offering 34 songs in total, which range from the tender to the ebullient. I find Warlock the most intriguing twentieth-century English song composer, and hold him as high in my affections as Britten and Finzi in this kind of repertoire.

John Mark Ainsley (born 9 July 1963) is an English lyric tenor. Known for his supple voice, Ainsley is particularly admired for his interpretations of baroque music and the works of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. In the course of his career, he has gravitated towards 20th-century music, singing in operas by Henze, Janáček, and Britten. Ainsley was born in Crewe, Cheshire, the son of an Anglican priest and a teacher.
