The Ascension (stylized as the Ascension) is the third studio album by Otep. The album debuted at number 81 on the Billboard 200 with 10,200 copies sold.

Their twenty fourteen album, Constricting Rage of the Merciless, combined swift black and roll riff shifting with diabolic rhythms. It came across sounding something like Darkthrone meets Job For A Cowboy. This new release, Vengeful Ascension, comes in a cardboard digipack. What you see on the front cover is only about a third of the full painting of artwork. The booklet folds into six panels like one of those Moribund Cult mini posters. The obverse side features the full gruesome artwork of a large demonic figure holding a diminishing sun, filled with enclaves of naked humans and demons.

The Ascension album is everything an original African album should boast of, and I’m not just talking about features or titles alone. It’s evident in the album’s content and musical instrumentation – totally African! With 17 tracks that feel like 7, 2face successfully whipped up an album that reeks of energy from start to finish. While he never falls short with his lyrics or vocal styling, The Ascension is a test of his creative prowess which saw him come out with blazing guns proving that he is indeed, a musician at heart. He is 2face Idibia and he’s still king of afro R&B.

The lyrical theme deals with the timeless battle between good and evil, with the cosmic battle applying to earthly concerns. If you look at it from an everyday aspect in life, it's the idea of people, hitting the bottom of the barrel or you know, things just aren’t going right in lif. motion plays a huge part in how people react, Falgoust explains. He adds, Whether it’s based on love or hatred or sadness or whatever, there’s always an aspect of emotion that drives people to an extent

But for album six, The Afterman: Ascension (the first of a double album), the band eschews aliens and spaceships for the most bizarre construct of all: genuine emotions. The album’s major output focuses on ballads, a format the band expands beyond its usual sappy limitations.
