Louis Hayes & the Cannonball Legacy Band pay tribute to the drummer's late employer by exploring a number of songs that he recorded while working with Cannonball Adderley. The veteran is in great form, joined by alto saxophonist Vincent Herring, trumpeter Jeremy Pelt, pianist Rick Germanson, and bassist Vicente Archer.

Louis Hayes (also called Louis Hayes with Nat Adderley and Yusef Lateef) is the eponymous debut album by American jazz drummer Louis Hayes recorded in 1960 for Vee-Jay Records. The personnel includes the Cannonball Adderley's 1960 Quintet with Yusef Lateef in place of the leader. The album was also re-released in 1974 under Lateef's name as Contemplation.

On Dreamin’ of Cannonball (TCB) he breathes fire into 10 tunes associated with one of the most popular combos in jazz. With this kind of group, the alto chair is crucial, and Hayes was smart to pick Vincent Herring, a saxophonist with formidable technique and the appropriately aggressive attitude to put it over. Like Adderley, Herring tells a story when he plays, quotes other songs in his solos (. 52nd St. Theme ) and always plays hip turnarounds at the ends of his phrases.

Hayes is a superb bop drummer, with Art Blakey's steamy ferocity and an unrelenting determination to goad soloists. As a one-time member of Cannonball Adderley's band in the late 1950s, he is well-placed to keep the torch burning. The Adderley band's brand of hard bop was characterised by a lot of bluesy call-and-response, themes with wailing gospel undercurrents, heated soloing and a percussion style that appeared to oblige the others to dance on lava. The soloists here are terrific: Vincent Herring's alto sax exudes earthy soulfulness, while trumpeter Jeremy Pelt catches.
