Supermodel of the World is the debut studio album by American drag queen RuPaul, released on June 8, 1993 by Tommy Boy Records. It is his second album overall, his first release being a soundtrack album. With the release of the Supermodel of the World album, RuPaul obtained higher celebrity status, notably due to the album's first single, "Supermodel (You Better Work)". Before the release of this album, he had done some modeling work as a drag queen, hence the album title.

About Supermodel of the World. This was the album that gained RuPaul mainstream success. Recorded at producer Eric Kupper’s house in Manhattan, RuPaul had already been immersed in the club scene for over a decade. He had just won the title Queen of Manhattan. When dance music group Deee-Lite made it big, RuPaul knew he had to act fast. He made a demo, shopped it around and Tommy Boy Records promptly signed him. He told Idolator: At the time lived right by where the World Trade towers were

Back when supermodels really did rule the world, RuPaul sashayed down his own rarefied runway: He went from New York nightlife celebrity to something beyond a drag queen lip-syncing other people’s songs for his life when he released his debut album, Supermodel of the World, 25 years ago on June 8, 1993. This was not an androgynous, sexually ambiguous artist like David Bowie, Boy George or Prince. Sixteen years before he shifted the culture with his reality-show competition RuPaul’s Drag Race, Ru was taking himself.

Boasting a decent vocal range and a strong passion for '70s disco/soul, Ru Paul is a bonafide dance/house music artist whose debut album, Supermodel proved him to be a definite asset to '90s house and R&B. When he tears into "Supermodel (You Better Work)" and other overtly '70s-influenced dance-floor gems, Ru Paul shows.

Supermodel of the World is the debut studio album by American drag queen RuPaul, released on June 8, 1993 by Tommy Boy Records. The album peaked at on the Billboard 200. Instant (and unexpected) popularity among all types of listeners triggered the ascent of RuPaul to celebrity status. Before the release of the album RuPaul was known primarily for being the only drag queen supermodel (hence the album title).

You better work': The influence of RuPaul’s Supermodel of the World, 25 years later. The only appealing gay person you saw on television at the time was MTV’s Pedro Zamora of The Real World, who later died from AIDS-related complications (1993 was also the peak year for new AIDS infections in the . according to the Center for Disease Control). Small wonder that, within the music business, even eventual gay icon George Michael cowered in the closet for another five years - and he only came out, somewhat involuntarily, after he was entrapped in a sex act in a public bathroom
