Beethoven: Piano Trios Opp. 70/1 & 97. (CD - Alto 1141). Ludwig van Beethoven. 2. Largo assai ed espressivo. Piano Trio in B flat, Op. 97 ("Archduke"). 4. 1. Allegro moderato.
Opus 70 is a set of two Piano Trios by Ludwig van Beethoven, written for piano, violin, and cello. Both trios were composed during Beethoven's stay at Countess Marie von Erdödy's estate, and both are dedicated to her for her hospitality. They were published in 1809. The first, in D major, known as the Ghost, is one of his best known works in the genre (rivaled only by the Archduke Trio).
The Piano Trio in B-flat major, Op. 97, by Ludwig van Beethoven is a piano trio completed in 1811. It is commonly referred to as the Archduke Trio, because it was dedicated to Archduke Rudolph of Austria, the youngest of twelve children of Leopold II, Holy Roman Emperor. Rudolf was an amateur pianist and a patron, friend, and composition student of Beethoven. Beethoven dedicated a total of fourteen compositions to the Archduke, who dedicated one of his own to Beethoven in return.

For these performances of Beethoven's last two piano trios Alexander Melnikov plays a restored fortepiano here, originally made by Alois Graff in Vienna around 1828. It sounds as if it's a remarkably even, relatively light-toned instrument, with a much more intimate, subtle sound than many from that period, and it blends perfectly with Isabelle Faust's wonderfully attentive, selfless violin playing, and Jean-Guihen Queyras's inquiringly musical cello.
