Before he took the stage at the 1964 Newport Folk Festival-the annual event that had given him his first real national exposure one year earlier-Bob Dylan was introduced by Ronnie Gilbert, a member of The Weavers: And here he i. ake him, you know him, he’s yours. In his 2004 memoir, Chronicles: Volume One, Dylan would write about how he failed to sense the ominous forebodings in the introduction.

Newport 1965 was the end of Bob Dylan. and the beginning of Bob Dylan. Some articles have organist Al Kooper backing up Dylan on guitar, others have the man behind the "Like a Rolling Stone" organ sound at his rightful place on the keys. Four months prior to "going electric" at Newport, Dylan released the album Bringing It All Back Home, which contained both an acoustic and an electric side. The single "Subterranean Homesick Blues" cracked the Top 40, peaking at No. 39.

Quotes Showing 1-10 of 10. What happened at Newport in 1965 was not just a musical disagreement or a single artist breaking with his past. It marked the end of the folk revival as a mass movement and the birth of rock as the mature artistic voice of a generation, and in their respective halves of the decade both folk and rock symbolized much more than music

When Bob Dylan went electric at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival, it would be the biggest artistic statement of Dylan's career. Dylan's performance was innocent enough. Intent on showing off a pocketful of new electric songs, some from his just-released lectric album, Bringing it All Back Home, Dylan tore into his music with driven abandon, as he commonly did during acoustic performances. A mix of both cheering and booing started when Dylan launched into Maggie's Farm, but the situation continued to melt down as he wound onward through the as-yet-unreleased single, Like a Rolling Stone
